This procedure is used to treat portal hypertension. It takes 1-2hrs, is done using x-ray guidance, and can normally be performed under sedation.

Occasionally a patient with actively bleeding varices may require an urgent TIPSS procedure. Significant resuscitation including red cells, clotting factors and platelets may be required to achieve sufficient stability for a GA. Appropriate management involves a RSI, IPPV, and arterial monitoring. Long-procedure precautions should be taken (warming / pressure points etc).
