Epidural Technique

A Tuohy needle is used - this has a bore large enough to allow a catheter to be placed, and a curved tip to reduce the risk of penetrating the dura.

A loss of resistance (or a "hanging drop") technique, is used to identify the epidural space. Saline is most commonly used, some anaesthetists still use air.
