MAKING MUSIC ON COMPUTER

Midi and Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology.

Host - Studio Software

IMO the best bang-for-your-buck in the DAW world. I spent a long time with Tracktion before it was bought by Mackie and left out in the sun to wither and die. The best replacement - Reaper.

MY MUSIC

Boaster Bo

I seem to spend a lot of time "noodling" on my midi keyboard, and producing a load of music snippets and experiments. Some of these I have uploaded to Soundcloud under the name Boaster Bo.

Piano Solo 2

Truepianos (Atlantis module), on top of background noise from an airport. Improvised, ambient.

Smooth Touch

Kontakt 4 has an excellent baritone sax ... here it is in a mix. As always, improvised ambient.

Boaster Bo

Some Zebra synth sounds, Jamstix drums, SR5 Bass. Improvised, ambient.

Suitcase

Messing about on the Neo-Soul Suitcase Fender Rhodes VSTi for Kontakt 4. Jamstix drums. Improvised snippet.

MY RECORD COLLECTION

Music that inspired me.

Larks Tongues in Aspic (King Crimson 1973)

A sunday afternoon in 1977, in the house of an elderly friend, one of my pals pushes a cassette into the stereogram and says "listen to this." I was mesmerised, the music was immensely complex and dynamic: ethereal violin solos and quirky songs mixed with towering guitar burns and virtuouso drumming. Some weird time-signatures (alternating 4 and 5 beat bars?). My teenage eyes were opened to a new musical world.

And some 1970s chillout, from their Red album, shut your eyes and float away to the sound of the Mellotron and Fripp's guitar.

801 Live (801 1976)

Uni life - waking up on a friend's floor one morning, he stuck this on his hifi. Great great music!
